Nature’s Path Heritage O’s Cereal

Ever since I heard the An Organic Conversation podcast on KAMUT®, I have been fascinated by the story of this ancient grain.  I was wandering through Whole Foods recently and stumbled upon a big bag of Nature’s Path Heritage O’s Cereal (Buy it at Amazon).

The word Kamut was staring me in the face and I have to admit that I said, “OH!”, right there in the aisle. KAMUT® brand khorasan wheat is always grown organically, has never been hybridized or genetically modified, and has high quality standards.

I decided to start my day with a bowl of Heritage O’s cereal and I was not disappointed. I do not drink milk, so I poured myself a bowl of the cereal and used some tasty organic French Vanilla yogurt from Stonyfield as the topper.

As I took my first bite, I enjoyed the top-notch crunch from the cereal, even after it sat in the yogurt for about five minutes. In fact, it never lost it’s crunch – all the way until the last bite. The flavor was bold but not overbearing. It tasted like a nutty whole grain cereal. I hate to use the word ‘nutty’, because it’s sort of like saying ‘it tastes like chicken’, but it does apply here.

I do enjoy a bit of sweetness in my cereal, and got that from the yogurt. I could have used a touch more sweetness in the cereal itself, but that’s just a preference. I am sure most people enjoy this cereal because it does NOT have that sweetness and I would never want to take that away from them. There are too many super-sugary varieties of cereal out there already.

According to the Nature’s Path website, the cereal contains; Organic whole oat flour, organic whole wheat meal, organic Kamut® Khorasan wheat flour, organic evaporated cane juice, organic spelt flour, organic barley flour, organic barley malt extract, organic quinoa flour, organic millet flour, sea salt, organic honey.

Is it wrong that this is my first experience with quinoa? Probably, but I have to say that it was a positive one! I look forward to having some in it’s non-flour form next.

The one problem I had with the cereal was the package itself. The reseal-flap didn’t work from the get-go. I had to tape the bag closed to keep it from going stale. At $8.99 a bag, I did not want to risk it going bad. That price point might shock some of us, but it is a huge bag!  I typically spend about $4 for my breakfast granola and there is easily twice as much Heritage O’s in the package.

In all, this cereal gets a big thumbs up. I also recommend reading the KAMUT® website to learn about the nutritional superiority of this product. There are also benefits to those that have wheat sensitivities. You might be a little shocked to find out what’s really going on with modern wheat as well.

Get on the Nice List with Organic Christmas Stockings

With Santa coming in just a few days, please consider skipping the traditional candy for your little one’s stocking stuffer.

There are countless varieties of organic candy & treats that they will LOVE. Honestly, most organic candy tastes better than the “other” kind. YummyEarth organic lollipops are really the best tasting lollipops that I’ve ever had.  They also have organic Gummy bears made without HFCS and nasty food coloring. In our home, our three year old daughter loves to receive both of these as a special treat. And the best part – no after-candy-insanity ensues. It’s just the right amount of natural sugar.

There are some amazing organic chocolate bars as well – almost all of which taste better than the big-brand stuff. Really – it tastes BETTER. Rapunzel, Newman’s Own Organics (they have awesome organic licorice too!), Dagoba and Green & Blacks all taste great. They aren’t that much more expensive either – but it’s worth it even if they were.

Don’t want to give candy? How about some nice organic apples? Maybe some organic hot cocoa? Consider a recycled or upcycled toy.

There are countless options to have an organic holiday. With just a little extra thought, you can figure out what’s best for your family. Keep an eye on the Natural Food List fan page to stay up to date with some great deals on organic products!
